Art School is expensive. I hoped that by the time I got here, education would be free. But it’s not. Much of my work then has molded itself in a variety of materials. Whatever was the most affordable was the way the work went. As such, my work became embodied using found objects: from the Library of Congress, from my father, from Goodwill.

Throughout college, I was always surprised that I was in college. Everyday I woke up, walked through the quad, ate bad cafeteria food, sat in the art library, and in all these moments I constantly found myself in a state of surprise. Why did I end up here? Why did I get citizenship when others did not? Why are there so many white people in this institution? Why was there a statue of a slave owner casually facing west? Everyday life has a sense of absurdity here.

My work now seeks to explore the nuances of history, to recollect the things we are in the process of forgetting, the things that can help explain “today” to us.

I was born to a family of corn and bean farmers in a small village, La Yerbabuena (“Spearmint”), in  Michoacán (“Place of the Fishermen”), México. I majored in International Studies with a focus in international human rights, and Photo/Media. My interests have focused on migration and diaspora studies, global economic relations, and access to education, law, and physical essential commodities.
